Mythology

Poet of the Fianna

Oisín is a warrior and poet of the Fianna and the son of Fionn mac Cumhaill.

He is one of the central figures of the Fenian Cycle and became the traditional voice through whom many stories of Fionn and the Fianna were remembered.

Oisín is especially famous for the later tale of his journey to Tír na nÓg, the supernatural Land of Youth. After what seems to him a relatively short time there, he returns to Ireland to discover that generations have passed.

His stories connect heroic adventure with some of the most enduring themes in Irish mythology: memory, loss, time and the passing of the old heroic world.

Explore the legend

Ossian's Grave / Glenaan

County Antrim, Northern Ireland

This prehistoric court tomb in Glenaan is traditionally known as Ossian's Grave and became associated in local tradition with Oisín, son of Fionn mac Cumhaill. The monument itself is thousands of years older than the stories of the Fianna, so it should not be presented as Oisín's historical burial place. Its importance to Celtic Clash is the later folklore and cultural tradition that connected this ancient landscape with Oisín.
