The Deadly Eye
Balor is one of the most formidable figures associated with the Fomorians in Irish mythology.
In the story of the Second Battle of Mag Tuired, Balor possesses a devastating eye whose gaze is lethal when it is opened in battle. He is also the grandfather of Lugh, despite the two standing on opposing sides of the great conflict between the Fomorians and the Tuatha Dé Danann.
During the battle Lugh confronts Balor and defeats him, making their encounter one of the defining episodes of the Mythological Cycle.

The dramatic cliffs and headland of Dún Bhalóir on Tory Island preserve one of Ireland's strongest landscape traditions associated with Balor. Local tradition identifies the site with Balor and the Fomorians. This is a traditional mythological association rather than evidence that Balor was a historical inhabitant of the site.
