Association: Strong regional folklore
The legend
South Armagh tradition tells how Fionn mac Cumhaill was lured into the summit lake by the Cailleach.
After entering the water, Fionn emerged transformed into an old man. His warriors eventually forced the enchantment to be reversed, although versions of the story preserve lasting consequences from the encounter.
The summit lake remains strongly associated with the Cailleach tradition.
The real place
Slieve Gullion rises above the Ring of Gullion and contains a real summit lake and important prehistoric monuments.
The surrounding geology, archaeology and folklore combine to produce one of the most atmospheric Celtic Clash locations.
Why it matters in Celtic Clash
Here two Celtic Clash cards collide in one landscape: Cailleach and Fionn.
Visit the place
Visitors can walk into the landscape through Slieve Gullion Forest Park and the summit trail.
This is an outdoor mountain environment. Check weather and current trail conditions before travelling.
The summit monuments are genuinely prehistoric; the Cailleach and Fionn stories belong to strong regional folklore.
